Process
Research and inspiration
Where we started.
We started by spending time at Stumbling Monk and talking with the owner, taking pictures and identifying the visual aspects of the physical space. In talking with the owner Rob, we learned about the history behind the original vision for Stumbling Monk. His focus is on Belgian beer specifically. The atmosphere of Stumbling Monk is based both on his grandmother’s bar in the UK that was a large part of his childhood as well as the many small watering holes he came upon while travelling northern Europe.
Main Concept
Hand crafted just like the beer.
We felt that in order to genuinely express the feel and atmosphere of Stumbling Monk, the assets need to be hand crafted. Our visual assets were hand illustrated and then turned into wood block prints. Stumbling monk is rough around the edges, but is as solid and uncompromising as it gets.

Lessons learned
In order to reflect the feeling of Stumbling monk required extra effort in illustration to give the rebrand a gritty no nonsense appearance. We had played with more digitized illustration techniques, but it felt disingenuous. In the end we had to get our hands dirty.
